Nothing to do with Freemasons here I'm afraid. All that stuff is just a load of bollocks. So if you were looking for something that ties this to all that carzy Freemason, Bilderberg, Templar, Iluminati, David Icke bullshit - try an entertainment website like AboveTopSecret. But here is something of interest: John Major, Howell James, Bell Pottinger, Sir Christopher Meyer - all featured in mid-90s New Labour and Conservative politics. They all also play an instrumental role in the story of Madeleine McCann.
Yesterday we learned of an old family link between David Symington (co-owner of the Ocean Club) and former British Prime Minister, John Major and between Major's former political aide, Howell James and the recruitment of Clarence Mitchell. It doesn't really explain anything, of course, but we shouldn't let it pass without a mention (for a full explanation of the McCann Lobby click here)
As it happens, John Major's former Political Secretary Howell James - a good friend of Peter Mandelson and Lord Bell (owner of Bell Pottinger) owns a hotel in Marrakech, Morocco - the very place that Madeleine McCann was spotted in May last year. James co-owns the Riad El Fenn hotel with Vanessa Branson - sister of Richard Branson, the multi-millionaire who pledged £100,000 to set up a fighting fund on behalf Gerry and Kate McCann (in an extraordinary political turnaround, Tony Blair made Howell James the Labour Government's Permanent Secretary of Communications in 2004. James resigned the post in June 2008 to take up the role of Head of Corporate Affairs at Barclays).
Yesterday a blog reader stumbled across this report from the Daily Telegraph in which it described John Major's regular visits to the Douro Region of Portugal as guests of the Symington family:
"While Tory prime ministers tended to holiday with friends abroad - Margaret Thatcher with Lady Glover, a widowed friend in Switzerland; John Major with Ian and Cynthia Symington in the Douro valley in Portugal" - http://www.telegraph.co.uk, 'Once Cornwall Was Good Enough, Now Only Barbados Will Do', 27/07/2003
The Symington mentioned in the report is Ian Douglas Symington, brother of David Symington (Ocean Club owner). From what we can gather from the press, Major spent the summers of '93 and '94 as guests of the Symingtons in the Douro region, escaping the political limelight. In fact there is a picture of Norma and John Major gracing the lobby of the Symington's 'stunning' family house, the Quinta Dos Malvedos. It is alleged the couple had been introduced by a distant cousin (it transpires that Ian Douglas Symington is the father of Johnny Symington who was appointed Honorary Consul in Porto, Portugal by the British Foreign Office in 2005. In addtion to being the brother of Ocean Club owner, David, Ian is also the uncle of Angus Symington, the man reported to bear 'an astonishing likeness' to Robert Murat and whose similarity ultimately undermined the witness accounts)
In the book 'Elites' by João de Pina-Cabral and Antónia Pedroso de Lima, the Symingtons (or 'Syms' as they are known) are described as the world's largest 'Port Gentry' family. In a story of 'unbroken elite succession', the authors contend that it is the task of the Symington Estate to entertain visitors and the media. They allege that the Symingtons provide an attractive 'gentry' front for the multinational corporations who own the more powerful 'Port Houses'. However, the authors are just as keen to emphasise that Symingtons and their rivals, the Robertsons, are 'directly emmeshed in the political economy' of the region:
"The Symingtons and the Robertsons have the resoucres to impose their interests and dispose of social arrangements and practices in their own fashion in circumstances they control with some ease ... in the circumscribed world of the Gaia-Douro, the Port Gentry have become the demonstrators of the life, the class (gender relations and nationality)" (Elites, João de Pina-Cabral and Antónia Pedroso de Lima, p.175)
Whilst the Symingtons entertained emminent British figureheads like Major, another rival family, the Taylors, received guests like the former US Secretary of State, James Baker and King Albert of Belgium. There is, however, something of an ongoing feud between the two families. Describing them as the two ruling 'dynasties' who have controlled the Port industry 'since the 17th Century', the authors illustrate a conflict more befiitting the Colbys and the Carringtons. The Symingtons are also Catholic (whilst many other Port familes are Anglicans) a characteristic that has proved popular with local nationals according to the writers of the book.
Whilst James Symington is described as the 'paterfamilias' of the Symington Group it is David Symington who owns the Ocean Club.
At the time John Major was Britain's Prime Minister, his political aide was Howell James - the man personally responsible for seconding Clarence Mitchell to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to represent the McCanns in June last year. Much to the surprise of the British Press, Blair had appointed Major's chief political aide, James as the Government's Permanent Secretary of Communications in in 2004. Naturally it caused waves. A Tory spokesman, at that time questioned appointing 'a good friend of Peter Mandelson to such a sensitive post' but the move went ahead all the same.

Of course, it is likely to be no more than a coincidence or tragic irony, but Howell James - the man who loaned Mitchell to the McCanns, co-owns one of the 'sexy' and prestigious Riad hotels in Marrakech, Morocco - the very place in which Mari Olli Pollard was alleged to have spotted Madeleine McCann on on May 9th 2007, a few days shortly after she disappeared. The witness alleges she had seen Madeleine at a Petrol Station near the Ibis Palmeraie Hotel, which is roughly a 10 minute walk from Howell's Riad El Fenn Hotel in Marrakech's Jemaa el Fna district. The 18 room property is described by The Mr and Mrs Smith guide as a 'small and exclusive hotel' that is suitable for couples and not children (Emma Loach, the producer of the Madeleine McCann One Year On documentary for ITV contributes reviews for the Mr and Mrs Smith Guide). This small and private former townhouse is managed on behalf of Howells and Vanessa Branson (sister of Richard Branson) by husband and wife team, Frederic Scholl and Viviana Gonzalez (brother Richard Branson owns the nearby 18 room Kasbah Tamadot hotel just outside of Marrakech).
The man who first introduced Howell to Major and secured the aide his first senior role was Tim Bell - the founder of Bell Pottinger whose crisis management team (including Alex Woolfall) were dispatched to Praia da Luz to represent the Ocean Club's media interests in the wake of Madeleine's disappearence.
Tim Bell (now Lord Bell and the founder of Bell Pottinger) was another who swapped allegiances when New Labour came along. In fact it was Lord Bell who successfully lobbied on behalf of the Saudi Government to have the BAE Arms deal charges dropped and rescued Blair from another criminal investigation.
In another surprise twist, we learn that Lord Bell also worked for Alexander Lukashenko - the authoritarian President of Belarus (a Belarus Orphanage is where the McCanns sent all those cuddly toys they received in Rothley). Bell was also on hand to help Blair and his investors sell 'democracy to the Iraqis'.
In addition to handling the McCann Crisis on behalf of the Ocean Club, Bell Pottinger handled all the media attention behind poisoned Russian ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.
In fact, Lord Bell, is a friend of Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky.
But the real biggy is this: Bell Pottinger's client, Michael Cherney was recently involved in a $4 billion business dispute with Oleg Deripaska.
Followers of the McCann saga may also be interested to note that Sir Christopher Meyer was the British Prime Minister John Major's Press Secretary in the mid-1990s. The man who New Statesman described as a 'starstruck egomaniac' was not only Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission at the time the McCanns were awarded their substantial payout from the Daily Express newspaper, he is also the husband of Lady Catherine Meyer, the woman responsible for first introducing the idea of an 'Amber Alert System' to the McCanns (and upon which the couple successfully lobbied the European Parliament). Sir Christopher Meyer, who had been Britain's Ambassador to the United States during the main bulk of the Blair years, 1997-2003, and had also represented Britain in Moscow and Germany, is to resign his post as Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission in March 2009.
Howell James resigned his post as the Government's Permanent Secretary of Communications in June 2008, following a string of resignations that includes Clarence Mitchell (from the COI), Sheree Dodd and John Buck (British Ambassador in Portugal).
So no conspiracy. Just a well respected circle pulling together in a crisis and helping the McCanns with their personal tragedy.

Very interesting read BW. I wonder where it will all end?
Sir Christopher Meyer keeps cropping up. He was on the Andrew Marr programme this morning.
Tony Blair too, always hovering in the background.

Nah. I don't think this has much to do with Major or Thatcher. The Symingtons - just like any of the Port and Wine families in Portugal and Spain - are likely to have had many friends and guests. That book on Portugal's trade dynasties, 'Elites' contends that entertaining is very much a part of the role they occupy within the Port House. According to the book there are multi-national corporations behind the actual Port House their business is a part of. Their role is perfectly transparent.
Of course, all these figures may trace back to John Major originally - but if the Yacht scandal has taught us anything (other than the fact that our politicians are just as outrageous and amusing as any of BBC Radio's light-entertainers) it's that the line between the Tories and Labour have become increasingly blurred over recent years (thanks to the rise of the new ruling Political Class)..
Let's face it: all the main figures featured in the above - like Howell James, Christopher Meyer and Lord Bell also worked for and represented the interests of New Labour and Tony Blair - and not just Major.
Howell James - the one who has the hotel with Richard Branson's sister in Marrakech, Morocco is a very good friend of Peter Mandelson and Mandelson is a very good example of how close some of the Conservative and New Labour personnel can get when away from the prying eyes of the media.

Baroness Hogg's sister-in-law, Justice Hogg is described by the Daily Telegraph as Madeleine's 'legal guardian' ...
So Hogg's 3i company is linked to Brian Kennedy and Control Risks Group?
Here's a look in more detail:
She attended the foremost Roman Catholic convent school in England. She is married to Douglas Hogg, 3rd Viscount of Halisham. Daughter offormer Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster-General Lord Boyd-Carpenter. This makes her a part of the Hogg 'legal and political dynasty'.
Educated at Oxford, Baronness Hogg (Sarah Hogg) was Head of the Downing Street Policy Unit for Sir John Major (as luck would have it, she was replaced by our old friend Howell James - the man who requested Mitchell for the McCanns). She was also Govenor at the BBC from 2000-2004. The BBC's Greg Dyke was less than affectionate about Hogg in his memoirs (Dyke says it was Blair and Hogg in particular who were responsible for his dismissal after the Hutton report on the death of government weapons expert David Kelly)
When she joined the private equity group 3i she became the first woman to chair a FTSE 100.
She is the sister-in-law of ...
Justice Hogg (Dame Mary Claire Hogg), 52, daughter of former Lord Chancellor Lord Hailsham and sister of former agriculture minister Douglas Hogg - the famous legal and political dynasty.
In a bizarre twist (and this is really funky) Justice Hogg has (in a strange and slightly tenuous way) been Madeleine's legal guardian since she was made a ward of the High Court of England and Wales.
Dame Mary Claire Hogg (Justice Hogg) has had a career in child-welfare.
During a court hearing on 7 July 2008 Hogg made a plea to Madeleine's abductor to "show mercy and compassion" and reveal her whereabouts.
It was during this hearing that Justice Hogg persuaded Leicestershire Police to reveal their files to the McCanns.
A Daily Telegraph report described how Justice Hogg had effectively become 'Madeleine's legal guardian'.
It's certainly a small world.
Mind you, it has to be said 3i investments are a fairly large organisation with lots of fingers in different pies. But an interesting series of links.

You are correct , 3i are huge so wil prob have links everywhere. Just odd that they have so many with people involved in this case. As with most things there are connections everywhere but most mean nothing.

I tend to agree. The thing that strikes me most is learning that Baroness Hogg's sister-in-law, Justice Hogg is 'legal guardian' of Madeleine (although I think the Telegraph's phrasing is fairly imaginative, even by press standards). And Hogg's support of Blair during the Greg Dyke/Hutton crisis supports the idea that the old polarities and boundaries between New Labour and the Conservatives are fairly meaningless in today's centrist paradise.
It seems all these figures we've been looking at (Howell James, Christopher Meyer, Lord Bell of Bell Pottinger, Sarah Hogg) have been as much a part of the Blair/New Labour regime as John Major's government.
I think you've dealt a pretty strong blow to this particular house of cards. We certainly have a better picture of how deep and wide this social network is, and how much it crosses the party boundaries (just as the recent 'yacht' affair did).
Is there still one shadowy 'guest' missing from this jigsaw, or can it all be resolved by looking at the Ocean Club and the figures fingered already?
Author BW (send 04/11/2008 @ 08:28:46)
TBH BW I still think there is one shadowy guest or scenario missing.
Call me a complete nut case but I am wondering if the Mcs have had to sign the OSA for some reason. I really do not think the level of interest from on high would simply be afforded to two Doctors from the East Midlands
I still feel the PJ investigation tripped over something else that was happening in PDL. I guess we will never know.

I suppose we really have to ask how much a scandal at the Ocean Club involving members of its staff would have hurt these people. Murat's exact blood-ties, business-ties may shed light on all this yet.
I mean, I thought we were just dealing with Mark Warner etc
But of course, the Police have cleared him of any suspicion. May not stop even your most powerful friends from worrying though.

UPDATED* Brilliant Kim. Keep 'em coming. That's a corker.
Sorry Palin, suffered a complete lapse on the irony of Shaun Woodward being at Howell James' and Venessa Branson's decadent Moroccan retreat (Riad el Fenn - about a 10 mins walk from where madeleine was spotted) (see John Major, Howell James and Riad el Fenn Hotel)
Just been refreshing my memory. You got something really important here.
Hope people follow this, it's a good one, but it's all down to Palin, really.
Right ...
Woodward was Secretary/Director of Communications for John Major's government (back in 91-92). Started out as researcher and producer on Esther Rantzen's 'That's Life'.
Made a much celebrated defection to New Labour (I have no doubt he was influenced by Mandelson's friendship with Howell James - a colleague of Woodward's during his time with Major's conservative government). Wooward and Mandelson are now good friends.
Woodward's MP seat in Witney was given to David Cameron in around 2001/2.
Blair put him in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Brown put him in as Northern Ireland Secretary (wasn't Gerry's politcal science chum Alistair Clark based at Queen's University Belfast?)
Woodward wrote a book with good friend, Sarah Caplin called 'Drugwatch'.
Sarah Caplin is now a senior executive (Head of Features) with ITV (makers of the Madeleine McCann: One Year On Documentary).
Sarah Caplin is married to Nick Ross - presenter of BBC's 'Crimewatch' (like Gerry McCann's friend Alistair Clark - the first person Gerry is alleged to have called when Madeleine went mssing, Ross attended Queen's University Belfast). Woodward also used to be Ross's producer.
Key witnesses at the Ocean Club were Jeremy Wilkins and partner, Bridget O’Donnell who are BBC/Crimewatch producers (Wilkins was Gerry's tennis partner and man standing outside apartment).
The media couple Sarah Caplin and Nick Ross hosted Tony Blair's 2001 Election Night Party. Howell James, Esther Rantzen at the Shaun Woodward were there.
Anyway, Woodward is married to Camilla Sainsbury - cousin of Lord (David) Sainsbury - the Labour donor at the centre of Blair's Cash For Honours Scandal and the man alleged to have been responsible for bringing Mandelson back into the New Labour cabinet.
Woodward is also friends with Esther Rantzen (whom Woodward worked with on That's Life and the book about Ben Harper). Rantzen is the founder and President of ChildLine - which has since merged with the NSPCC. Rantzen (a Kate lookalike?) blamed herself for the 'unashamedly politcally correct' hysteria surrounding child protection in Britain (a kind of 'climate of fear' in the nursery. Not planes this time but crayons).
Woodward was also director and former deputy chairman of Childline with Rantzen.
According to the Liberal England Blogsot, Woodward appears to attract his own army of troll. It is alleged that members of his forum have been writing unusually 'graphic' accounts of spanking children.

*******
When things like this stack up, you get the impression that's its all a hoax.
The New Labour government has appointed more press and TV figures to senior government posts than any other government in history. Which is not a problem in itself, obviously. The problem only occurs when those TV and Media figures think they can transfer all the covert and executive mechanisms of media production across to Politics and Humanitarian missions wholesale. If the whole thing has looked stage-managed, then it’s likely that it has been stage-managed.
That BBC Crimewatch Producers were vital witnesses in this drama, should have brought it home much earlier.

I didn't know Crimewatch's Nick Ross was involved with the 'Jewish Association for the Mentally Ill'. I wonder if he knew Ariel Sharon?
Ross's wife, Sarah Caplin was also a founder of ChildLine along with Woodward and Esther Rantzen.
Ross has had a role on several government committees (including the Committee on the Ethics of Gene Therapy, the Gene Therapy Advisory Committee.
Seems Nick was removed from Crimewatch at the end of June 2007.
Seems there was quite a list resignations amongst this lot last year (Howell, Mitchell, Buck, Meyer etc)

Time for a recap before I wrap up completely:
- The owner of the Ocean Club is David Symington of the famous Symington Wine Dynasty in Porto, Portugal. The British Press publish reports on Angus Symington's likeness to Robert Murat.
- David Symington is brother of Ian Douglas Symington, who is an old friend of ex-British Prime Minister, John Major.
- John Major regularly holidays with Ian Douglas Symington family in the Duoro valley near Porto in Portugal.
- David's nephew John Symington is Britains' Honorary Consul in Porto and a colleague of former British Ambassador in Portugal John Buck (who was consul to the McCanns).
- The Ocean Club employs Bell Pottinger to handle 'crisis management'. The Bell Pottinger company is founded by Lord Tim Bell - good friend of John Major and Conservative/New Labour Spin-Doctor (Alex Woolfall is Head of Crisis Management at Bell Pottinger and also handled US Giant Monsanto's Genetically Modified Food controversy)
- Blair's Communications Secretary Howell James personally recruits Clarence Mitchell.
- Howell James was John Major's Political Secretary during the last time Conseravtive Government. He later becomes Tony Blair's Permanent Secreatry of Communications (resigned in 2008).
- The McCanns employ Hanover PR an agency owned by John Major's Director of Communications and Press Secretary, Charles Lewington (also featured in the 'lobbygate' row)
- McCanns befriend Sir Christopher Meyer and Lady Meyer in the Amber Alert Campaign. Christopher Meyer was press secretary to John Major and is Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission. The Press Complaints Commission's row with the Express over the McCanns led to the award of £500,000 to the couple and the departure of Express Editor, Peter Hill.
- Justice Hogg is made the 'legal guardian' (ward of court) of Madeleine McCann.
- Justice Hogg's sister-in-law is Baroness Hogg (Sarah Hogg) former Head of the Downing Street Policy Unit for Sir John Major and former Chief Govenor at the BBC (she is also a Blair ally)
- Baroness Hogg's 3i company invests in Brian Kennedy and Control Risks Group.
- Howell James (ex-personal aide to John Major and Blair minister) and Vanessa Branson (brother of legal fees guarantor, Richard Branson) own the Riad el Fenn hotel in Marrakech, Morocco - about 15mins walk from where Madeleine was 'spotted'.
- Shaun Woodward (Conservative MP and former Press Secretary to John Major) has 50th Anniversary bash at the Riad el Fenn hotel onwed by Howell James and Branson. He also sits on the 'Committee on Human Rights' at the House of Lords. Woodward is a close friend of the openly gay Howell James and Peter Mendelson.
- Shaun Woodward is also the new 'unlikely confidante' of Gordon Brown (as reported by The Telegraph in August 2008)
- Shaun Woodward is co-founder of Childline with Sarah Caplin and Esther Rantzen.
- Sarah Caplin is the Head of Features at ITV and is married to Nick Ross of UK's Crimewatch UK (BBC)
- Ocean Club witnesses Jeremy Wilkins and his partner Bridget O Donnell are former producers of the BBC's 'Crimewatch UK' (specialising in docu-dramas and crime reconstructions).
- Madeleine McCann goes missing two-weeks before the high-profile re-launch of UK Charity 'Missing Persons' (re-launched on the EU's Missing Children Day). The McCann family are in attendence. Patrons of the charity include Nick Ross, Sir Cliff Richard, Richard Branson and Lorraine Kelly. Director of 'Missing Persons', Paul Tuohy is a former colleague of Esther McVey.
- Missing Persons patron, friend of Tony Blair and celebrated Algrave Wine producer, Sir Cliff Richard has a villa and vineyard just outside Praia da Luz. Sir Cliff now lives with his 'friend' Father John, a former Catholic Priest.
- Rupert Symington and the Symington Family Estare are members of the exclusive Primum Familiae Vini, a grouping of eleven leading wine families in the world that include Mouton Rothschild. Here is a picture of Rupert with Julien de Rothschild at a Vinni event: http://www.pfv.org/html/fichactu.php3?N=34 The Rothschilds are renowned for their generous donations to the Conservative Party and their bipartisan activities with Lord Mandelson.
