The Daily Mail story quoted by Paulo Reis on his imaginative Madeleine website is a bit of a 'non-story', twisting the central facts to make a sensational (and false) claim:

From what I can gather, it may be possible that certain publication orders and seek and find orders run more smoothly if the child is 'ward of court' and may override certain aspects of Portugal's strict-secrecy laws (which may explain how they were able to release the sketches etc)
